Why Blackout Blinds Aren’t Always Enough — And How Blackout Curtains Solve Light Leakage

Many homeowners choose blackout blinds expecting a completely dark bedroom.

They make sense at first. Blackout blinds are neat, modern and often promoted as the obvious choice for blocking sunlight. But in real homes, especially in bedrooms, the result can be very different from what people expect.

One of our recent Curtain House customers had already installed blackout blinds in their bedroom, but they were still struggling with light entering the room early in the morning. The blind itself was not the problem. The issue was the way the window recess was built.

Because the blackout blind sat inside the recess, small gaps were left around the edges. During the brighter months in Ireland, those narrow strips of light became enough to disturb sleep.

The Hidden Problem With Blackout Blinds

Even blackout blinds can allow light to leak around the edges when fitted inside a narrow recess.

A blackout blind can block light through the fabric, but it does not always block light around the fabric.

This is where many homeowners get caught out. The word blackout usually refers to the material itself. It means the fabric is designed to prevent light passing through it. But if the blind is fitted inside a recess, there will usually be a small gap between the edge of the blind and the wall or window frame.

In some windows, that gap is barely noticeable. In others, especially shallow or narrow recesses, it can create visible lines of daylight on both sides of the blind.

For this customer, the blackout blind covered the glass, but it could not fully cover the edges of the recess. The result was a bedroom that never felt completely dark.

Why This Matters More During Irish Summers

Long summer daylight hours can make bedroom light control more important for quality sleep.

In Ireland, summer daylight can be beautiful, but it can also be a challenge for bedrooms.

Early sunrises, longer evenings and brighter mornings can make it harder to sleep, especially for children, light-sensitive sleepers, shift workers or anyone who needs a darker room to rest properly.

Even a small amount of light entering around the window can make a bedroom feel less restful. This is why the correct blackout solution is not just about choosing blackout fabric. It is about choosing the right product for the window shape, recess depth and room requirement.

Why Inside-Recess Blinds Can Let Light In

Light leakage occurs when the blind cannot fully cover the sides of the window recess.

Inside-recess blinds are fitted within the window opening. This can look very tidy and minimal, but it also limits how much coverage the blind can provide.

A roller blind needs space to move freely up and down. It cannot usually sit perfectly tight against both sides of the recess. The brackets, roller mechanism and fabric width all create small areas where light can escape.

If the window frame does not have enough width or depth inside the recess, the blind may perform well in the centre but still allow daylight to leak around the perimeter.

This is one of the most common reasons homeowners feel disappointed after installing blackout blinds in a bedroom.

The Alternative: Outside-Recess Roller Blinds

Installing a blind outside the recess can improve blackout performance by reducing side gaps.

There is a technical way to improve blackout performance with blinds. A roller blind can be fitted outside the recess, wider than the window opening, so that the fabric overlaps the wall on both sides.

When positioned correctly, the blind drops close to the wall and helps reduce the side gaps. This can make the room significantly darker than an inside-recess blind.

However, this option does not suit every home. The blind becomes more visible, the roller and brackets are exposed, and the overall look can feel less refined. In a carefully styled bedroom, an outside-recess roller blind can sometimes feel more practical than beautiful.

For homeowners who want both strong light control and a softer interior finish, blackout curtains are often the better solution.

How Blackout Curtains Solved the Problem

Made to measure blackout curtains extending beyond the window frame for maximum light control
Properly fitted blackout curtains help block light leakage while enhancing the overall look of the room.

For this bedroom, we recommended made-to-measure blackout curtains.

Unlike blinds, curtains do not stop at the edge of the glass. With the right track or pole placement, they can extend beyond the window frame and cover the surrounding wall area. Their natural fullness also helps close the visual and functional gaps where light usually escapes.

This makes blackout curtains especially effective for bedrooms where the main issue is not light passing through the fabric, but light leaking around the window edges.

Once installed, the room felt noticeably darker, calmer and more complete. The curtains did not just improve sleep comfort; they also made the bedroom feel warmer, softer and more finished.

Blackout Curtains Offer More Than Darkness

A good blackout curtain does more than block sunlight.

It can improve privacy, reduce glare, soften the acoustics of the room and add a more luxurious feeling to the space. In colder months, lined curtains can also help create an additional layer of insulation around the window.

This is particularly useful in Irish homes, where bedrooms need to feel comfortable across changing seasons. During summer, blackout curtains help manage early morning brightness. During winter, they can help the room feel cosier and more protected.

Curtains vs Blackout Blinds: Which Is Better?

The answer depends on the window.

If your window has enough wall space and you are happy with an outside-recess blind, a blackout roller blind can work well. But if your blind needs to sit inside a narrow recess, it may not give you the full darkness you are expecting.

Blackout curtains are often the better option when you want stronger edge coverage, a more elegant finish and a bedroom that feels properly designed rather than simply covered.

The most important thing is to assess the window before choosing the product. The right solution depends on recess depth, wall space, window size, room style and how dark you need the room to be.

Our Advice Before You Buy

One of the most expensive mistakes homeowners make is buying blinds or curtains before understanding how their window actually behaves.

In this case, the customer had already paid for blackout blinds before realising they were not enough for the bedroom. The blinds were not wrong, but they were not the best solution for that particular window and requirement.

At Curtain House, we always look at the full window area before recommending a product. We consider the recess, the surrounding wall, the desired level of darkness, the room style, privacy needs, thermal comfort and the final aesthetic.

Because the best window treatment is not always the most popular one. It is the one that works properly for your home.
